About Venice

Venice is where surf culture, tech money, and old-school bohemian grit collide on the same block. Founded in 1905 by tobacco millionaire Abbot Kinney as "Venice of America" — a literal copy of Venice, Italy, complete with 16 miles of canals and imported Italian gondoliers — it became its own city before being absorbed by LA in 1926. Today it's Silicon Beach's spiritual home.

The gentrification tension is real. Artists and longtime renters have been pushed out. Tiny bungalows that sold for $200K in the 90s now trade at $1.5M and up. What hasn't changed: the weekend drum circle on the boardwalk and the fact that on a Tuesday morning you can walk the canals, explore a new restaurant on Abbot Kinney, and still be exactly where you need to be.

The Venice Canals are the neighborhood's best-kept secret. Of the original 16 miles of canals Abbot Kinney built, only six remain today — the rest were paved over in 1929 for cars. Those six canals (Dell, Carroll, Linnie, Howland, Sherman, Eastern) sit one block from the boardwalk chaos in near-total quiet, and buying here is an entirely different market from the rest of Venice.
